Dear What am I worth,
I am 31, and have an MCSE with two-and-a-half years' experience as a systems administrator for a manufacturing firm based in Scotland.
I am the sole member of the department responsible for two NT servers, a Linux POP3 server and two Cisco routers. I also provide desktop support for 60 users. My wife and I are considering moving to New Zealand. Would it be difficult for me to find employment and what sort of house could I afford (a measure of the standard of life)?
Candle IT & T Recruitment replies: You are probably looking at a salary of $45,000 to $55,000. It shouldn't be too difficult for you to find a job, but it may be best for you to come to New Zealand on a visitor's visa to look at what is available, attend interviews and look at houses. What type of house you can afford depends on the amount of money you can bring with you as a deposit, and where you are going to live. Houses are more expensive in Auckland than Wellington.
As with any location, you will find a range of house prices, depending on how close to the inner city you want to live. House prices are much lower in the South Island, but there are also somewhat fewer job opportunities. Soft Landings NZ (www.softlandings.co.nz) may be able to help you, regarding life in New Zealand.
