New Zealand Post has created ECN Group, a business “cluster” that gathers together a number of IT companies the state-owned enterprise has a financial interest in.

NZ Post’s stake in each of the nine companies ranges from 2% to 100%. Spokesman Ian Long says together they employ between 200 and 300 staff.

Long says the ECN Group is the successor to NZ Post’s new ventures group.

“At the moment, it is just simply an organisational structure,” he says. “We’ll obviously be looking to contain some costs.”

Two of the companies are based in Australia. They might be used to introduce the other companies to the Australian market, Long says.

“We want to leverage whatever opportunities we can on both sides of the Tasman.”

The companies that make up ECN Group are Electronic Commerce Network, MessageMedia, Infolink, Silent One, Tedis, The Dawson Group, Synapse, Marketboomer and e-Media. Former Infinity Group head Ross Baker has been named chief executive.
