Dear What am I Worth,
After my wife and I visited New Zealand, we have been thinking about moving there. I'm curious about the salary ranges in my field, so that I may better understand if I could sustain my current lifestyle. Here in the US I make $US58k per year gross. I am not yet familiar with what percentage of taxation I would incur, so I would appreciate an estimate along with the salary estimate. Ideally, I would like to live and work in or around either Auckland or Wellington. I work for a Fortune 200 company as a senior enterprise server analyst. My primary responsibilities include support and implementation of DNS, DHCP, WINS, NT4 Enterprise backups and Microsoft Cluster Server, and I'm beginning to work with Windows 2000. I have been working with PC hardware for over 10 years and network operating systems for over five years. I am certified in A+, CNA (Novell 4.11) and MCSE MCP+I. By the time we move, I will also hold a BS degree in IS with a minor in business. Due to the size of my company, a certain amount of specialisation is required, so I have considerably less experience with mail, routers and SQL, but I would call it a working knowledge nonetheless.
Candle replies: Your current income has no relevance in the New Zealand market. Your skills, however, indicate that you would be worth $70,000 to $75,000. This would result in a "take-home pay packet" after tax of approximately $1900 to $2100 per two-week period.
