Dear What Am I Worth,
I am a software tester/analyst with more than three years of software testing experience, including 15 months with financial services industry software. I work in Sydney for a large credit reporting organisation.
Software expertise includes planning of test specifications for others and myself, test co-ordination and presentation of test results to senior management. I have worked on Y2k testing, European monetary union testing and interactive voice response system testing, among other things. In particular, I have spent the last 18 months testing e-commerce Web sites for two companies. I have an honours degree in business studies, majoring in IS management.
I can work independently or with a test team and have been a test team leader in more than one role with up to eight junior testers. I am interested in knowing my worth both as a permanent employee and as a contractor, based in the Auckland area.
IT @ Manpower replies: If just over three years is the total of your IT experience since university, I would expect you to earn $55,000 as a test analyst/consultant in Auckland, or $45 to $50 an hour as a contractor, depending on contract duration. Wellington may be a better location for your financial services experience, though permanent salaries will be a little less. What's important for testers is knowledge of automated test tools.
