New Zealand is not affected by Dell’s recall of 27,000 computer batteries after a report that a customer’s notebook was damaged after the battery overheated.

Dell spokesman Rob Small says the faulty Sanyo batteries were only put into notebooks sold in Europe and the United States.

The batteries can short circuit, even when not in use, causing them to become extremely hot, smoke and potentially catch fire, Dell says. The recall is for the batteries only, not the notebooks they work in.
