Qualifications in Business Computing

  • Certificate of Business Computing
Upon successful completion of the CBC programme students may apply to enter the second year of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems. However they may choose to enter employment.

Entry Requirements: Entry to the programme is subject to an interview.

Duration: 1 year

Career Opportunities & Further Training: Further tertiary study may lead into Bachelor of Applied Information Systems. Career opportunities are: programming, computer sales, network installation and support, trainee systems analyst, data base administration, personal computer tuition and help desk support.

Certificates

  • Certificate in Information Systems
The Certificate in Information Systems is an integrated study programme, based on four streams of knowledge: Information (systems analysis: IS planning and management), Technology (networking, operating systems, Internet/Intranet technology), Software development (database (Access), programming (Java and Visual Basic), Web distributed programming) and Organisational (accounting, management, people).

Entry Requirements: School leavers: 20 or less in their four best Sixth Form Certificate subjects or have successfully completed the National Certificate in Computing (NCC) Level 3 or 4, preference given to those who have completed NCC Level 4. Non school leavers or 20 years and over: evidence of ability to study at tertiary level.

Duration: 1 year.

Career Opportunities & Further Training: Information Systems graduates are sought after in many areas of the information systems industry. Some examples of possible careers are: Help desk support, programming, network installation/support, internet/intranet operator, computer sales/personal computer tuition, systems analysis (trainee), database administration, computer operation.

This qualification is aligned with the year-one Bachelor of Applied Information Systems (BAppIS) programme. Students who successfully complete all CIS units at the appropriate grade can apply for admission to the second year of BAppIS.

Diplomas

  • New Zealand Diploma in Business
This qualification is recognised by employers throughout New Zealand. The aim is to develop a specialised knowledge in at least one discipline of management studies and to develop "hands-on" skills in business problem solving. The Diploma staircases from the NZIM Certificate in Management

Entry Requirements: Applicants need Sixth Form Certificate, not more than 20 in four subjects. Entry for non school leavers is open.

Duration: 2 years full time. May be studied part time.

Career Opportunities & Further Training: Further study may be taken in various areas including Bachelor of Management Studies.

Degrees

  • Bachelor of Applied Information Systems
This degree prepares graduates to take up a place in the constantly evolving information systems industry. The four major areas of study are Technology (computer organisation, data communications, networking, multi-user systems with Linux, operating systems, distributed systems), Software Development (databases, object oriented programming (Java & Visual Basic), web distributed systems); Information Systems (systems analysis, management and strategic planning of the information systems) and Organisation (communication, management, human resource). During the third year of study students will complete a major industry-based project.

Entry Requirements: School leavers: at least three "C" passes in bursary. Applicants will be admitted with a total of 16 or less in four subjects in Sixth Form Certificate.Mature applicants aged 20 or over who are able to show evidence of their ability to study at tertiary level.

Duration: 3 years.

Career Opportunities: Database design and implementation, software engineering and programming, web design and development, Internet/Intranet design and development, network management and administration, information systems planning and management, systems analysis.

  • Bachelor of Business Management
Offers students opportunities to major in the subject areas of accounting, marketing, management of information systems and management.

The degree staircases from the existing Faculty of Business programmes including the New Zealand Diploma in Business and the NZIM Certificate in Management.

Entry Requirements: Sixth Form Certificate with 12 or less in four subjects, New Zealand Diploma in Business graduates "B" average, non school leavers open entry.

Duration: 3 years full time. May be studied part-time.

Career Opportunities: Further study up to Masters level may be taken at any New Zealand university. Career opportunities for graduates exist in various fields including information systems.

  • Bachelor of Management Studies
In conjunction with the University of Waikato. The Northland Polytechnic Faculty of Business has established an agreement with the University enabling up to three years of the BMS programme to be delivered at the Whangarei Campus. The aim of this course is to develop a creative and critical perspective on many aspects of management studies and to develop practical "hands-on" skills in business problem solving.

Entry Requirements: Sixth Form Certificate with 12 or less in four subjects, New Zealand Diploma in Business graduates 'B' average, non school leavers open entry.

Duration: 4 years full time. May be studied part time.

Career Opportunities: Further study up to Masters level may be taken at any New Zealand university. Career opportunities for graduates exist in various fields including management.

  • Bachelor of Science (Technology)
Northland Polytechnic offers the first year courses to students wishing to major in various areas including computer science.

Entry Requirements: Sixth form passes in four of the following: English, biology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, geography

Duration: We offer full time study for the first year of this degree programme.

Career Opportunities & Further Training: Successful students may choose further tertiary study to Masters level. Graduates find employment in the various areas including computing.
