Qualifications in Business Computing

  • CBC, DipBC and NDBC
These three qualifications can stand alone, or lead on to each other.

The first year is the Certificate in Business Computing (CBC). The second year is the Diploma in Business Computing (DipBC). The third year is the National Diploma in Business Computing (NDBC). The CBC modules provide extensive background knowledge in Interpersonal Skills; Business Communications; Business Applications; Hardware Fundamentals; Software Fundamentals; Programming Principles; Program Development; Data Organisation and Control; and System Overview.

The DipBC aims to produce graduates who have acquired detailed knowledge and skills in selected areas, enabling them to move towards specialisation in the information technology industry.

The National Diploma in Business Computing (NDBC) allows students to specialise in a particular area of the IT industry. One third of the course is based on a project selected by you, which focuses on developing the skills for the career that you wish to undertake. Duration: 1 year each (full-time).

Entry Requirements: CBC - selection will be based on motivation, maturity and prior academic performance; DipBC –CBC graduates or obtained equivalent work experience; NDBC – DipBC or obtained equivalent work experience.

Career Opportunities: The CBC can lead to jobs as a junior programmer or support person, database assistant or PC salesperson. The DipBC and NDBC can lead to jobs as a Programmer and Information engineer, Database manager, Systems analyst, designer, PC support person, Help desk operator, Call centre employee, Web page designer, Network Administrator, Multimedia developer, Project manager.


  • Hutt Valley Polytechnic (HVP) Certificate in Cybertechnology
The course objective is to enable Certificate in Business Computing holders to gain additional skills and knowledge that are required for employment in the internet industry. About 600 hours of study is required to gain the certificate. This can be done either full-time (18 weeks at approximately 35 hours per week) or part-time.

Content: The modules cover: fundamentals of the internet; website development; multimedia development; Object orientated techniques; e-commerce, website administration and Java script.

Entry Requirements: Students must have the Certificate in Business Computing.

Duration: Half a year of full-time study. Can also be completed part-time.

Career Opportunities: Graduates may be able to seek employment as web designers and multimedia developers.

  • HVP Certificate in Advanced Computing Applications
This programme is designed for students who already hold a computing degree and who require practical hands-on computing skills. Modules are chosen from options available from the Diploma in Business Computing.

Entry Requirements: Selection will be based on the applicants’ qualifications, motivation and maturity.

Duration: To gain the certificate requires half a year of full-time study. When undertaken on a part-time basis, duration will depend on the number of modules completed each semester.

Career Opportunities: By gaining additional hands-on experience, degree graduates may be able to enhance their career options in the IT industry.


  • Degree in Information Systems and Technology
Aimed at students who would like to complete a degree majoring in information systems may do so in conjunction with the Open Polytechnic.

The Information Systems & Technology major brings together business computing and IT skills and knowledge and provides an excellent grounding for tomorrow's "hybrid manager", who needs to understand equally the business requirements and technical possibilities of the job.

Students enrol with the Open Polytechnic through Hutt Valley Polytechnic and will receive personal study support, access to computer hardware, and the support of fellow students.

Gain an industry-recognised qualification. This qualification is available as an option for students enrolled in the Diploma in Business Computing area.
