Dear What Am I Worth,

I am a senior Java developer/team leader based in London, but returning home early next year. I have a degree in commerce, and six years' IT experience in a predominantly client-server, relational database environment in the financial services and management consultancy sectors.

For the past 18 months I have been developing in Java, in particular the J2EE platform, and Weblogic. I also have about four years' experience programming in Oracle, and have a year of team leading experience. My work has been throughout all phases of the system development life cycle, much of it in client facing consultancy type roles.

Can you tell me what rate I could expect in both a permanent Java team leading type of role, and as a contractor.

Homeward bound

De Winter International replies: A permanent position would be worth $85,000 to $110,000 and as a contractor you might earn from $60 to $100 an hour. Some of our clients are prepared to pay even more. You have the skill set of the moment.
