The US Senate has approved the FY04 US Department of Defense appropriations bill (H.R. 2658), which includes wording that would virtually halt funding for the controversial Pentagon Total Information Awareness (TIA) program. The bill says that no funds appropriated to the Department of Defense may be used toward the research and development of TIA, a program designed to allow the government to mine intelligence and personal data of civilians, including credit card purchases and medical and travel records.
