After initially blaming a new computer system for delays in processing resource consents, Auckland City is now pointing the finger elsewhere.
The council is writing to applicants advising them that an earlier letter was wrong in blaming a computer system for holding up processing and that the backlog is the result of a 30% jump in the number of applications.
Spokeswoman Susan McGregor says applications are taking 40 working days to deal with rather than the normal 20 days, and it will take at least a month to catch up.
"We've had an unusually high number of consents applied for this year. It's up on last year's total by around 30%."
McGregor says the new IT system blamed in the initial letter sent to applicants has not actually been deployed.
"We haven't introduced the new system yet so we're sending another letter clarifying the situation."
