New Zealand Oracle user group vice-president Erica Harris says a decision by the database vendor to extend error correction support for its 8i database "caught us by surprise — pleasantly".

Oracle originally planned to cease the function, which involved providing support for newly found bugs, from December (except for customers running certain other Oracle applications as well as the database) but earlier this month announced an extension of a year, to December 2004.

Harris, who is database administrator at Environment Waikato, says "I'd started a project with the knowledge that [December 2003] was the date.

"The project was to do the planning for an upgrade to 9i, on the basis that the cut-off date was 2003, but we've deferred it now."
