The Zafi.B worm hammered Xtra's mail servers yesterday, causing large amounts of traffic. This in turn led to delays for both Xtra customers and other ISPs wanting to deliver mail to them.
Telecom broadband and internet PR specialist Nick Brown says: "the volume of Zafi-related emails going through the anti-virus filters has affected time required to filter legitimate mail”.
Brown adds that "we have the appropriate patch in place on the Xtra email virus filter" and that Xtra is working to remove these delays by increasing resources dedicated to anti-virus filtering.
An ISP network technician who didn't want to be named says a third of all email traffic was Zafi.B related.
"We are getting 15 times as much Zafi.B as the different Netsky variants," the technician says.
