Telstra, People Telecom opt for Ericsson for network upgrades

Telstra announces 'world first' 200km range in mobile broadband

Telstra and dual-listed telco People Telecom have both opted for Ericsson to upgrade their networks.

Telstra and Ericsson announced what they claim is a of the world's first 200km cell range in a commercial mobile broadband network at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

Ericsson's Extended Range software has been installed and activated at some mountaintop sites to deliver the 200km connection. The range is a big jump from the 50km range generally supported today, the companies say.

ASX and NZX-listed People Telecom chose Ericsson's Redback Networks to implement Smartedge internet aggregation equipment to improve the quality of service it provides existing ADSL customers and to improve scalability of the network.

CEO John Stanton says strong sales of 8MB-per-second broadband means the company has to keep expanding its network to ensure quality of service for consumer and business users.
