What happens when an old, established network collides with the internet? Much of the security and privacy we’ve taken for granted could get compromised, it seems.
That’s what happened this week, when Telecom’s 027 voice mail was found to be vulnerable. It’s not a “PC” or “internet” hack, as some media have reported but instead, the old network being (ab)used in an unexpected manner via the new network.
Because we’ve been conditioned into trusting the existing telephone network, this incident has taken many people by surprise. It’s a large-scale surprise as well, as Telecom has well over a million 027 customers. We don’t know at this stage the extent of the compromise, but what we’ve seen so far is worrying.
