Toshiba to consider R&D centre in Russia

The company plans a major expansion of its business activities in Russia

Toshiba is considering building a research and development centre in Russia, the company says.

The centre, should it be formed, would work in such areas as software development and take advantage of local high-tech skills, Toshiba says. The company already has R&D centres in Japan, China, the US, and the UK.

Toshiba's intention to study the establishment of a Russian research base came as the Tokyo company announced a major expansion of its business activities in Russia with the formation of a local subsidiary, Toshiba Rus in Moscow.

The new unit was established on February 8 and will start by marketing Toshiba's overall product line-up from April. It will be responsible for marketing and branding of Toshiba in Russia and will gradually integrate the company's existing representative offices in the country. The company will particularly focus on promotion of goods in high-growth markets such as notebook PCs, digital products, electronic components and white goods, Toshiba says.
