Wednesday's nine-hour outage that affected some 8,000 ADSL customers on both Telecom and wholesale ISPs' networks was caused by an ATM switch failing, industry sources say.
Corporate customers were also hit by the outage, but Telecom has so far not issued any comment on it. Nor has the telco said if it will offer compensation for lack of service.
Service in west Auckland and areas in and around Mt Albert was disrupted by the ATM switch failing. Service was restored early Thursday morning, and an investigation was launched into the reason for the failure and the long resolution process, our sources say. Telecom has in the past advertised its core network as having "five nines" (99.999 per cent) reliability.
