Auckland ISP Orcon has taken a further step towards becoming a fully-fledged telecommunications carrier, by signing the Number Administration Deed, or NAD. By signing, Orcon is able to apply for phone number ranges that it intends to use for its internet telephony service over naked DSL.
Scott Bartlett, Orcon's general manager of operations and regulatory affairs, says the ISP has also joined the Telecommunications Carriers Forum (TCF), and taken a seat on the board there. The TCF is an industry forum for telcos operating in New Zealand.
While unwilling to divulge when Orcon will start offering its VoIP service, Bartlett says it will run over naked DSL (phone lines with the DSL signal only and no Telecom-supplied voice service) and be launched with nationwide local numbers.
Orcon is currently in talks with Telecom over both naked DSL and installing DSLAMs into exchanges as per the new telco industry regulation proposed by Communications Minister David Cunliffe.
