Axon wins Beca deal, automates 1,700 desktops

Beca can now roll out software to any machine in the company from a single point

Axon has automated the management of 1,700 desktops at Beca, a professional services consultancy, replacing Novell Zenworks in the process.

Beca, which has controlling interests in companies in Australia and Singapore, can now roll out software to any machine in the company from a single point.

CIO Robin Johansen says this centralised management capability also radically simplifies administration of hardware and software.

“We had problems maintaining standards, deploying patches and dealing with viruses as the network grew and extended to new countries,” he says.

“Our business case for this project was not justified around return on investment; we just needed to keep our environment standardised, up-to-date and safe. We couldn’t afford to have any weak or untended spots in our network.”

He says Beca’s strategy is to progressively roll over inventory with an average economic life of three years.

“Now, it’s easy to see what’s coming up for replacement, how much RAM it has, and whether it can run the new operating system. It will save us countless man hours.”

Axon implemented System Management Server for the six-week project. It set up an application packaging process using Wise Package Studio Professional. Several hundred applications are being ported using a standard application format that provides a “wrapper” around the application, resulting in a more stable environment.

The wrapper is key to automating the processes between purchasing and the end user. A new machine can be plugged in and the standard image, including the operating system and core applications, installs automatically.
