The increasing importance of resellers and business partners in the ICT industry was recognised at the inaugural IBM New Zealand Business Partner Awards, held at Auckland's waterside Pontoon restaurant on November 16.
The awards, held in association with Computerworld sister publication Reseller News, acknowledged the best IBM partners in seven categories, and there was also a prize for the best non-IBM business partner.
Earlier this year, end-users were asked to nominate IBM resellers, partners and systems integrators who they thought had done a great job of installing and servicing IBM products at their organisation. Among those asked to nominate champion resellers were Computerworld readers.
After judging by an independent panel, the winners were announced at the Auckland function. They were: Gen-i (infrastructure simplification), Crossware (best small business deal), SolNet Solutions (service-oriented architecture), Certus Solutions (workplace collaboration), Integral Technology (information management), Quanta Systems (ISV and SI) and SQL Services (best non-IBM partner).
Another IBM partner, Designer Technology, while not winning an award, was highly commended, and the overall supreme winner was SolNet Solutions.
One of the most noticeable trends in the ICT industry in recent years is a shift by major vendors towards selling through business partners. Many vendors are trying to sell more products to small and medium-sized enterprises, and doing so is generally easier if done through resellers and systems integrators.
