NZ's ICT exports surge

Competition and staffing are the biggest barriers to growth

Exports of ICT goods and services have surged 19.9% according to the latest Statistics New Zealand ICT Supply Survey.

Exports from the New Zealand ICT industry totalled $1.6 billion in 2006, representing 9.1% of locally generated ICT sales of $17.6 billion.

Electronic devices and equipment exports were up by $97 million to $525 million while audio and visual equipment had the largest total sales increase, up 27.1% to $970 million. Statistics New Zealand estimates there are 2,000 ICT business in the country with two or more employees.

Companies reported the strength of competition as the biggest barrier to sales followed by attracting and retaining staff.
