Equipment upgrade causes router failure

Several thousand broadband customers of Telecom and ISPs who buy its wholesale service were cut off this morning for five hours, by a fault that apparently sprang from an attempted upgrade.

Telecom was upgrading equipment at about 5:30 this morning, a spokeswoman says. The work exposed or indirectly caused a fault in a network component, believed to be a router.

Service was restored at 10:35, says Telecom. Domestic and commercial customers were affected as well as Parliament.

Affected users may need to reboot their modems to restore service.
