Former HP MD to take Vodafone ChCh recovery role

Russell Hewitt to head carrier's Christchurch operations

Vodafone has appointed Russell Hewitt, former CEO of Vodafone Australia and ex-managing director of HP New Zealand, to head Vodafone’s Christchurch business recovery operation.

A statement from Vodafone announcing Hewitt’s appointment reads: “In this new role Hewitt will be working with Christchurch civil authorities to understand the local recovery needs and to align these with Vodafone’s own business recovery plan.

In the statement, Vodafone NZ CEO Russell Stanners says: "Rebuilding Christchurch is going to take a long time and we want to make sure that we are doing the right thing by our people, our customers and the City. Appointing an executive of Russell Hewitt's calibre, reporting directly to me, demonstrates just how seriously we take our role in the recovery of Christchurch."

Hewitt will be focused on ensuring the company’s Christchurch-based employees are fully supported, the needs of customers in the region are met, and challenges facing Vodafone and the local community are addressed both now and into the future, the statement says.

Hewitt was most recently managing director of Vodafone First Mobile, which Vodafone acquired last year. Before that, he was CEO of Vodafone Australia, taking up the role in 2005 after joining the company in 2004. Before that, he was managing director of HP New Zealand.
