Emerging Australian telecommunications group Soul has won a five year, multimillion dollar deal with the Australian government welfare agency, Centrelink.

Soul will deploy its telecommunications data services to more than 350 Centrelink sites across Australia.

As one of the largest users of telecommunications services in Australia, Soul claims this win validates smaller telcos as a genuine alternative to the traditional carriers. One of the key design elements of the Centrelink Data Network Redesign Project (DNRP) involves the deployment of independent data paths to mission critical locations.

This architecture will provide Centrelink with “physical redundancy infrastructure designed to ensure that vital services remain available to end users at all times.”

Soul CEO Michael Simmons says the telco was able to meet Centrelink’s technology requirements because its networks are independent and purpose-built to support IP traffic.

“By using an end-to-end Cisco network rather than a mix of different vendor products, Soul can provide the highest possible quality of service and scalability,” Simmon says. “This ability allows Soul to cater for truly converged services and emerging applications such as multicasting, secure virtual private network (VPN), business VoIP and consumer VoIP services.”

The Centrelink network will include access points in major centres to connect more than 350 sites for a wide range of Centrelink functions. The network includes a fully converged video, voice and data IP-based network with distributed switching throughout regional Australia and capital cities.

ASX-listed Soul was established in 2000 and is servicing more than 500,000 consumers.
