The Industry Capability Network has appointed industry veteran David Sheppard its first full-time ICT advisor.
ICN, a business unit of Trade and Enterprise, was established to help companies realise their potential through access to local opportunities that grow their scale and capability, providing a foundation to move into global markets.
Sheppard says his role is to pre-qualify the market and to make it more friendly for small to medium enterprises.
“We’re looking to upskill procurement offices and to standardise. The procurement process currently inhibits innovation because it is prescriptive.”
While his role is aimed at making business easier for SMEs, they are not good at partnering, he says. “That’s because they are worried they will be ripped off if they partner with a larger company.”
ICN covers six sectors of industry but mainly at the commodity end. That’s where the ICT role differs, focusing on involving local companies in larger projects.
