Weta first licensee for Microsoft graphics

Studio uses technology to focus on creative ideas

Weta Digital, maker of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and other films, is the first to sign a licensing agreement with Microsoft for its graphics technology, Microsoft has announced.

Microsoft Research undertakes a broad range of development in graphics areas. According to its website, it focuses on new multimedia and graphics that are made possible with the growth in computing power and storage.

“Our research focus spans the linear and interactive media spectrum across television, broadband, and gaming. We seek to address the challenges involved in the high-computational cost of producing, transmitting, and displaying complex models by researching geometric compression and multiresolution representations,” the site says.

Joe Letteri, senior visual effects supervisor at Weta Digital, said in a statement that Weta Digital saw some of this new research last year and thought it would make a great addition to the company’s toolkit.

“We realised that by working directly with Microsoft Research, we could develop these ideas faster and spend more time on the creative effects,” Letteri says.
