Emergency department-GP data sharing project goes live

e-Referrals system also expands; will include Auckland and Wellington GPs this year

Electronic health data specialist HealthLink has gone live with a project that enables hospital emergency department clinicians to request key information for general practitioners’ systems.

Chief executive Tom Bowden says Care Insight is a new technology that will enable a hospital emergency department to get an accurate and up-to-date record of a patient’s current condition, including a detailed explanation of what drugs have been prescribed by the general practice.

The system also has the ability to request a dispensing record from local pharmacies.

Bowden says HealthLink has been focusing also on electronic referrals between primary and secondary care.

“Our e-Referrals system is being used in four district health board regions, and by September the Auckland District Health Board e-referrals project is expected to have gone live across all of Auckland’s 450 general practices.

“We’ve also been involved for the past two years in a collaborative project with Aotea Pathology in Wellington. Since December, an electronic pathology ordering system has been in pilot at a small number of general practices.

“The system is going very well and will be rolled out across Wellington from the middle of the year.”
