OnTrack plans network unification

An initial implementation in one centre is planned for early next year, with a progressive rollout to other sites over the following six months

OnTrack, the manager of the country’s railway tracks, is exploring options for unifying its voice and data infrastructure nationwide. The company has issued a request for expressions of interest from potential integrators.

“OnTrack’s goal is to have a cost effective, co-ordinated approach to telecommunications … encompassing voice and data using fixed and wireless communication,” the document says.

“OnTrack will work to develop a communications system that works as a coherent and cost-efficient whole, rather than a group of separate entities.”

The company currently has a PABX network with almost 500 voice and 100 fax extensions at 30 sites, as well as a wide-area data network. It is prepared to use the WAN as part of any integrated set-up, though wireless links could also be involved.

OnTrack plans to issue a request for proposal to shortlisted vendors and to select a preferred vendor by late November.
