Bill McCabe leaves 2degrees

Chief operating officer resigns to return to the UK, but will work for mobile operator as consultant

Bill McCabe has resigned as chief operating officer at 2degrees.

McCabe's departure was officially announced to staff today; a media statement from 2degrees this afternoon reads: "Our COO, Bill McCabe, is returning to the UK, where he’ll continue to work for 2degrees on commercial and regulatory issues.

After three years, it’s time to take a young family home where they can be with friends and their wider family.

"Bill joined 2degrees before it launched and has been instrumental in commercial and regulatory activity that has positioned 2degrees so well for the future. Yesterday’s decision on Mobile Termination Rates is a great example of Bill’s contribution the business.

"He’s loved his time here, and given that his youngest son was born here, we know New Zealand will always be a special place for the McCabe family."

McCabe joined 2degrees in 2008 as chief commercial operator, after working for Hutchison 3G in Ireland.

McCabe's work from the UK for 2degrees will be on a consulting basis, says Michael Bouliane, communications manager at 2degrees.

"Bill was brought in because of his international experience with late entrant mobile operators, and brought understanding of international commercial and regulatory issues with him," Bouliane says.

"He’ll be working for us from the UK, and we’ll still be getting access to those skills. He may not be in the building but he’ll still be a very big part of our business."
