Chris Jones appointed honorary consul to Botswana

Pioneer of mobile services to developing countries gains diplomatic role

Controversial telecomms entrepreneur Chris Jones has been appointed honorary consul to Botswana by the New Zealand government.

The announcement was made late last week, at the same time that Botswana’s High Commissioner visited Christchurch and made a donation on his country’s behalf towards rebuilding the city.

Jones has been involved in two mobile telecomms firms, Telemedia in the early 2000s and Argent Networks a few years later, which ended up being liquidated.

Both firms were extensively involved in establishing mobile services in developing countries.

Jones went on to found Mobilis Networks, with products that include Eclipse, a billing platform for mobile carriers. As with his other two ventures, many of Mobilis' clients are in Africa.

Mobilis was named in the Deloitte Fast 50 Index last year as the fastest growing local technology company.
