ACC revisits major Gen-i contract

Tender for new contract goes out early; current Gen-i contract to run its course

A five-year contract the Accident Compensation Corporation awarded to Gen-i is being revisited nearly 18 months before it is due to expire.

The contract for the provision of ICT services ends in December 2012. ACC says in a statement to Computerworld that it has decided to go to tender “slightly earlier” than was originally scheduled.

“The decision will ensure the tender is finalised ahead of future work planned,” says the corporation’s CIO Richard Doig.

Gen-i tipped out the incumbent Unisys when it won the deal in 2007. It headed a consortium that included Sun, iData and Red Rock Consulting. At the time of the deal Computerworld reported the contract was thought to be worth around $125 million over five years. It encompassed operations, helpdesk, network support and desktop services.

It later sub-contracted Datacraft (now Dimension Data) for network services.

ACC has two large Sun (now Oracle) mainframes, but has since migrated from Sun blades to Hewlett-Packard blades. Red Rock was sub-contracted to manage the Oracle databases.

The earlier contract with Unisys was based on an 8am to 5pm service, with additional charges for service out of those hours.

The contract with Gen-i is understood to be 24x7.

ACC recently issued a tender for eChannel integration. It plans to issue a second RFP for data and voice, then the replacement RFP for IT services.

An ACC spokesman says in response to Computerworld inquiries: “At this stage we’re preparing to go to tender. The tender will be based on our specific requirements, which we’re currently finalising.”

Gen-i CEO Chris Quin says in a statement: “We have jointly decided to go to tender slightly early than was originally scheduled and we are working closely with ACC to minimise any disruption to their business.”
