Telecom appoints oversight group chair

Retired silk Barry Patterson to take lead on separation oversight

Telecom's Board has announced the appointment of the chairman of the Independent Oversight Group (IOG), established to ensure that Telecom complies with its Operational Separation Undertakings.

The IOG will be chaired by retired High Court judge Hon Barry Paterson QC.

Paterson has a background in corporate, commercial, trust and property law, telecom said in a statement today. During his time in practice he was a director of many companies including five NZX listed companies.

The announcement came after a flurry of company news flowing out of Telecom's investor briefing in Sydney today, including CEO Paul Reynold's plans for the company and Gen-i's plans.

Paterson is currently chairman of the Sports Disputes Tribunal of New Zealand, the New Zealand Press Council and Electronic Transaction Services.

The remaining members of the IOG will be announced on the completion of their appointments, Telecom says. The IOG will include a further two independent members, and two non-independent members.

Telecom chairman Wayne Boyd says the IOG will be governed by a majority of independent members and would report to both Telecom's Board and the Commerce Commission.
