Stats prepares for 2011 census

Application Virtualisation allows applications to be enclosed in a virtual "bubble"

Statistics New Zealand is perpetuating the life of some of its legacy applications using Microsoft’s Application Virtualisation technology (formerly called SoftGrid) with Microsoft Terminal Services.

The implementation was done with the aid of Microsoft Innovation Centre funding.

Application Virtualisation allows applications to be enclosed in a virtual “bubble” with all necessary registry information and ancillary routines. This can be run on an up-to-date Windows environment such as Vista.

The Stats applications were written using Sybase and Centura.

As an outgrowth of the project, Stats will be using RemoteApps, part of Terminal Server 2008, to process census returns in 2011 using thin clients at regional offices. “We’ll be running a dress rehearsal for the census in 2010 and we’re only 18 months away from that,” says Stats consultant Chris Tock.
