Influential US blog Techcrunch is calling New Zealand "land of LotR and high-priced data plans" after today's iPhone pricing announcements from Vodafone.
"A lot of folks have been complaining about these prices but in light of these international plans, including nasty plans from europe, AT&T's pricing isn't that bad," a post by John Biggs says.
On another tech blog, Crunchgear, Devin Coldewey writes:
"Oh my god! Are they insane? The Vodafone New Zealand site
is choking right now is back up, and this appears to be the most god-awful money-grabbing scheme I’ve ever seen in this dirty business. I feel for you guys in Canada but this is highway robbery on a whole other scale."
Meanwhile, local users appear to be similarly discontented. One potential customer has started a petition asking Vodafone to offer a pre-pay option on the IPhone 3G, which at the time of checking today had garnered 678 signatures.
Rumours that a plan-free iPhone 3G could cost close to $1,000 appear to be confirmed by US reports.
