Plan-b opens Hamilton recovery centre

Plan-b's recovery sites used to re-establish businesses affected by localised crisis

Business recovery service provider Plan-b opened its first facility outside of Auckland this week in what it says is the start of a nationwide rollout.

The site, which will provide crisis seating for 60 at launch and up to 90 further down the track, is on the 11th floor of the same Hamilton block housing TelstraClear’s point of presence in the Waikato.

Plan-b’s Symon Thurlow says the company has invested in a new Siemens HiPath 8000 IP telephone system that can serve multiple tenants and which can be rapidly scaled. He says it is the first such unit in New Zealand.

Another first, he says, is the rollout of VMware’s virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), which is running on an Auckland-based IBM server. The software can service 100 concurrent users and is also scalable to deliver the client’s desktop environment to Wyse terminals in the recovery facility.

The company has also invested in Sun servers, adding to its existing support for x86 and IBM e and i series systems.

Plan-b’s recovery sites are used to re-establish businesses affected by what Thurlow calls a localised crisis — an event that requires an organisation to abandon its current building.

The infrastructure selected is designed to allow multiple tenants to cohabit within a centre, with physically separate network switches and individual firewalls.

Plan-b has two facilities in Auckland as well as two mobile facilities on 12 metre trucks, each housing nine people. The company is now planning further rollouts in Wellington and Christchurch.

Thurlow says the Hamilton investment is in the order of half a million dollars.
