Crown Fibre Holdings and Chorus have announced the appointment of Gavin Walker as Independent Chairman of the Steering Committee governing the parts of the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) rollout that have been assigned to Chorus.
Chorus's share amounts to almost 70 percent of the total UFB project.
A statement announcing the appointment notes: "Mr Walker brings considerable experience to the role. He is currently the Chairman of the ASB Bank Limited, Sovereign Insurance and the online retail and wholesale stock broking entities of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia; Commonwealth Securities Pty Limited. He is also a Director of Lion Pty Limited [formerly Nathan National Foods Limited] and the Guardians of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund.
"He was previously the founding Chief Executive and a Director of the Bankers Trust New Zealand Limited until 1996 before going on to head Bankers Trust Investment Bank in Sydney."
Chorus Chairman Designate, Sue Sheldon says in the statement: “His intimate knowledge of corporate finance, investment and corporate governance at the most senior of levels, makes Gavin Walker a high calibre Chairman for this important role.
In the statement, Walker says: “This appointment comes at a turning point in the New Zealand telecommunications marketplace.
“I look forward to contributing to a thriving competitive environment as we roll out UFB.”
