Prisons to jam cellphone use

Jammers will block unauthorised use of mobiles in the lock-up

The Telecommunications Carriers' Forum (TCF), which represents network operators, has endorsed a new code to the control the unauthorised use of mobile phones in prisons.

The code governs the process, terms and conditions under which holders of spectrum rights will grant spectrum licences to the Department of Corrections to control calls to or from mobile phones located within prisons, the TCF says.

The code aims to allow calls to be blocked through the use of interference generating transmitters or “jammers”.

The parties to the code will be the Department of Corrections and any party holding spectrum management rights that agrees to be bound by the code.
