Broadband blackout in Auckland city

Blown fuse causes TelstraClear outage

A blown fuse caused an internet outage for TelstraClear customers in the Auckland CBD this afternoon.

The two-hour broadband blackout centred around the Shortland Street exchange, writes the National Business Review. Only customers of TelstraClear were affected.

The blown fuse was linked to a switch that runs a D-Slam, according to a TelstraClear spokesman. A D-Slam is a piece of hardware that connects multiple broadband lines to a network backbone. The D-Slam fell over, blacking out access for around 60 business customers, spokesman Chris Mirams told NBR.

The blackout began around 12.30pm, with the system back up around 2.30pm.
