Bruce Parkes, best known in the ICT sector for his involvement with Telecom, has been appointed deputy secretary for telecommunications and energy at the Ministry of Economic Development.
Parkes has been general manager corporate affairs at power company Contact Energy, since late 2006.
Immediately before that he spent 13 years with Telecom. As general manager government and industry relations, he gained a high profile defending the company’s stance in a number of Commerce Commission hearings on telecoms regulatory reform.
A senior MED source says Parkes’s Telecom involvement should not reflect negatively in the public’s eyes on his position with the Ministry. “That was years ago and New Zealand is a small country; there aren’t that many people with his experience in the telecommunications and energy industries.”
