Telcos are staying in Christchurch, with all major network providers either maintaining or increasing their presence. None reported significant damage to their networks following the latest spate of aftershocks.
At 1300 staff, Telecom has the biggest presence, with offices scattered around the city.
TelstraClear, which has 200 staff, says it had factored further seismic activity into its plans and is committed to maintaining its hybrid fibre coaxial system in the city.
Vodafone says it has 40 staff based in Christchurch and has invested in 20 new cell sites in suburban areas where businesses have relocated and it has bought 20 new generators to power the central Christchurch network in the event of a major power outage or emergency.
2degrees says it has slightly increased its staff numbers in Christchurch.
Chorus says it services some 122,000 premises through 1,150km of fibre optic cable and more than 5,000km of copper and anticipates continuing to invest to meet the needs of homes and businesses throughout the region. It has about 50 direct employees located in the city.
