Telecom goes in-house for new head of mobile

Internal candidate appointed to succeed Paul Hamburger

Telecom has made an internal appointment to fill the head of mobile vacated earlier this year by Paul Hamburger.

Kieren Cooney, currently CEO of Telecom retail dealer partner Leading Edge, will take up the role in June, shortly before incumbent Paul Hamburger’s contract expires.

Telecom announced recently that Hamburger will not be renewing his contract.

The timing of Cooney’s appointment means there will be a transition period in which he will work with Hamburger on the handover.

Before taking up the Leading Edge CEO post, Cooney held several executive roles at Vodafone. He has also worked at TouchPoint, eVentures and Tacit Group.

In a statement announcing the appointment, it is noted: “Mr Cooney’s responsibility will be the commercial operations of Telecom’s mobile business such as product management, plans, handsets, and roaming as well as supply chain, retail promotions and sales.

“The role doesn’t include management of the network infrastructure.”
