Vodafone to cut global roaming rates

Price reductions include special Australian offer

Vodafone is cutting mobile roaming prices around the world by two thirds, from $30/MB in some places to a standard $10/MB on any network, anywhere in the world. Customers roaming in Vodafone's destinations now has just one price to pay — $10/MB — regardless of which network they connect to. Vodafone is extending the offer even further for New Zealand’s most popular roaming destination, Australia.

Vodafone visitors to Australia will be able to use data at $2/MB, a 93% reduction over the current maximum data roaming charge of $30/MB.

Vodafone’s general manager of Products, Services and Internet, Kursten Shalfoon, says Vodafone wants to make it easier for customers to stay connected anywhere in the world without them needing to know which network charges what price per megabyte for data.

“We see a huge opportunity in the explosion of smartphones in the market," Shalfoon is quoted as saying in a media release from Vodafone.

"They’re the fastest growing market segment and we’ve taken the bull by the horns to help increase demand for mobile data abroad by dramatically reducing the price.

“Customers tell us they want to use their smartphones when travelling in the same way they use them at home, and we’re working towards that," Shalfoon says.

The new roaming rates apply to all Vodafone customers who roam from May 26 May regardless of what kind of Vodafone device they use — smartphone, Vodem or Blackberry. The three-month promotional Australian offer ends on August 26.
