Tertiary institutes sign up for KAREN

Polytechs and institutes to get connectivity

Seven institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) will join the KAREN network in the next few months, says Donald Clark, chief executive of the Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ).

Gen-i has been awarded contracts to provide connectivity services for six of them. The contracts are for 55 months. Gen-i will provide 1Gbit/s connections for the institutes back to the KAREN core.

The institutes signing up to KAREN are the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Eastern Institute of Technology, Southern Institute of Technology, Tairawhiti Polytechnic, Universal College of Learning, Western Institute of Technology in Taranaki, and Whitireia Community Polytechnic.

KAREN connectivity for the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic will be via investment in a 20-year term dark fibre link between Rotorua and Tauranga, provided by FX Networks.

Clark says this will be the first REANNZ-lit dark fibre spur on KAREN.
