Virgin Blue reservation system crash causes chaos in Australia

Outage forces airline to switch to manual check-in system

Airline Virgin Blue says a hardware failure at Navitaire, its reservations and check-in system vendor, was the reason for a company-wide computer failure that left thousands of passengers stranded at airports across Australia yesterday.

The crash forced the budget airline to switch to manual check-in, causing huge delays and flight cancellations, and sparking a request that passengers whose travel wasn't essential that day re-book it for another day.
