Unisys New Zealand has completed the expansion of its Kapiti datacentre near Wellington.
According to Unisys, the facility will achieve 25% power savings through adopting energy efficiency practices including a modular design and "free cooling" techniques using external cold air for cooling.
A key feature is the incorporation of a floating wall, allowing room size to be increased or decreased in line with client demand. This approach restricts the space being cooled to the area used.
“The new infrastructure design is all about scalability and sustainability. The power it takes to cool even a few extra square meters of space is significant. By incorporating free cooling and a floating wall, we increase floor space and cooling output only as needed, thereby reducing our power consumption,” says Unisys New Zealand managing director, Brett Hodgson.
The Kapiti datacentre is connected to Unisys Auckland datacentre, allowing the deployment of services and interconnectivity between peered systems. By doing so, Unisys can offer customers a geographic choice and disaster recovery solutions by data replication.
The current configuration occupies 50 percent of the upgraded meter rack space, allowing for growth in 2009.
