Vodafone NZ abandons Egypt contact centre

Vodafone will shift its offshore contact centre in Egypt back to New Zealand from May, the company announced today.

Director of customer service Kelly Moore says Vodafone is consolidating its contact centre operation in New Zealand and 125 new staff will join the 500-strong existing centre in Auckland. Vodafone has local three contact centres.

In February the Egytian contact centre, which serves pre-pay customers, was forced to shut down following widespread demonstrations against President Hosni Mubarak's government.

Vodafone established the Egyptian contact centre in 2007. At the time, the then Vodafone customer care director Andrea Midgen said a 35 percent increase in customer calls had prompted the need for a new call centre. She later told an industry conference that the Cairo operation represented a 35-38 percent saving for Vodafone.
