Sprint PCS beefs up wireless apps access

FRAMINGHAM (10/24/2003) - Sprint PCS is offering business users more choices when it comes to accessing their corporate applications remotely.

The wireless service provider announced earlier this week that it will enhance its Business Connection offerings.

Sprint PCS's Business Connection service allows users to access their corporate e-mail and calendaring applications over the wireless service provider's network. Customers deploy a server that sits behind their corporate firewall and allows users to securely navigate their applications while on the road.

The service enhancements include:

- full POP-3 support

- automatic e-mail synchronization

- the ability to view attachments on their handhelds

- availability of a software client for PocketPC users

- availability of a Palm software client for Handspring Treo 600 devices

Customers will be able to view their own personal e-mail accounts in addition to their corporate Microsoft Outlook account using a wider variety of devices.

The service is available now, but the enhancements listed above are slated for availability by year-end. Sprint PCS Business Connection costs US$300 to $500 for the server software, which comes from software manufacturer Seven. The software is a 5M-byte file that can be downloaded onto any server.

Customers also pay a monthly fee of $10 per user on top of any Sprint PCS service bundle that includes wireless data.
