New board connects (ISC)2 security professionals to public policy

Give back to society

Education and certification organisation (ISC)2 has formed an advisory board it hopes will be able to offer professional help in plugging some of the yawning gaps in public cybersecurity policy.

Working across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the volunteer board set itself a variety of goals at an inaugural board meeting last month, principally involving security professionals from around the continent more directly in cycbersecurity policy.

Named tasks include outreach to special interest groups across the continent, support for Cybersecurity Challenge UK, and the formation of an academic special interest group that will work with academia to address security deficiencies in undergraduate university courses.

(ISC)2 will also channel expertise from its professional members into the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance (ICSPA) Project 2020.

"The international professional security community has a significant role to play in the development of our digital society, and we are giving that community a voice through the EAB [European Advisory Board]," said (ISC)2 EMEA managing director, John Colley, who will co-chair the advisory board.

Other members will include Professor Claudio Cilli of the University of Rome, Swiss security consultant and tutor Dr Peter Berlich, Richard Nealon of AIB, Peter Drabwell from Credit Suisse, Iain Millar of Citihub, BCS Fellow Charles Marks, Geoff Harris of Alderbridge, Ionut Ionescu of Betfair and co-chair, Richard Nealon.

"We are responding to our membership's overwhelming desire to give back to society, while addressing a significant consultation gap in public and industry-led efforts to address cybersecurity issues," commented Nealon.

"The current instinct is to consult big industry and vendors with very few discussions actually including the information security professionals tackling the issues at hand. The EAB will work to balance the perspective," he said.

The advisory board will take its place among six boards under the (ISC)2's remit. More information on these can be found on the organisation's website.
