Experts to debate 'Future of the Perimeter' in webcast

Two of the security industry's most serious thinkers are getting together on Tuesday in a Webcast to discuss and debate the  "The Future of the Perimeter.

Marcus Ranum, CSO at Tenable Network Security as well as security instructor, has decades of experience designing some of the earliest network firewalls, as does Nir Zuk, co-founder of Palo Alto Technology. These two experts plan to discuss where network security for the perimeter has come from and where it's going.

How we tested firewall management products"The intention of the talk is to explore the different design theories we've both had at different times," Ranum says, adding that it's the first time he and Zuk have gotten together in this fashion. "I'll speak my mind."

The "Future of the Perimeter" discussion will be moderated by Aimpoint Group founder Mark Bouchard. The Ranum/Zuk talk may or may not end up as a engineering slugfest of opposing ideas, but both can be expected to take on the basic notion of the traditional firewall, which some see as an antiquated piece of equipment hampering e-commerce and mobile connectivity, and critique it for its security value.

"Security and connectivity have always been fighting for their roles," Zuk says. "They don't usually go together." He says he leans toward a school of thinking that "connectivity is very important, even if you give up some security."

But is the perimeter firewall dead, as some today like to say? "People who say the firewall is dead are idiots," Ranum says. The Webcast will begin at 2 p.m. EST. Registration information can be found here.
