Credit union offers free online transaction security

Regional credit union Bananacoast Community Credit Union (BCU) this week launched an Australian first initiative that sees the Internet security solution, TrustDefender, provided free of charge to its online customers.

TrustDefender is transaction security software that complements bank and customer's existing security applications, blocking attempts by criminals to access information and safeguarding online transactions.

BCU said the move to provide the solution to its customers for free came from a realization that many people are too busy, unconcerned or simply don't know how to implement software security measures for conducting online transactions.

CEO of BCU, Ray Battle, said TrustDefender provides the credit union's customers with a third layer of security for Internet banking.

"While we have many layers of security, the weak link in the chain is usually the home or business computer. Often people don't even have the basics such as firewalls or AV software installed on their computer. By offering TrustDefender to all our customers through our Web site - free of charge - we know that our customers will have the additional security of having their banking sessions quarantined while they transact," Battle said.

TrustDefender performs a security health check on the consumer's PC or mobile device during the click-through period to the login page. Any unknown malware that may exist on the machine that has not been picked up by the AV or firewall software before the customer logs into an online Web site can be identified before a transaction takes place.

"We feel sure that this will lead to an increase in the use of Internet banking by our customers who will be able to enjoy the convenience of anywhere, anytime management of their finances, with the peace of mind that they are doing the most they can to protect their money and identity," he said.

The free use of TrustDefender for BCU customers is limited to use on BCU's site.
