Grid operator to rev up Citrix environment

AUCKLAND (01/19/2004) - Transpower New Zealand Ltd. is shifting from Citrix Metaframe 1.8 to the newer XP version in a move the national grid operator describes as "more than just an upgrade."

"It's a complete re-architecting of our terminal server farm," says infrastructure program manager Paddy Hanna.

Transpower runs a simple Microsoft Office desktop environment, with other applications delivered either via Citrix or the Web.

Citrix technology has moved considerably since Transpower installed Metaframe 1.8 in 1999. Added to this, the hardware Transpower's installation is based on, which included Compaq 6500s, is nearing the end of its operational life, he says.

Metaframe XP is to be installed with Windows Server 2003 on new hardware including HP DL 360s.

New technology that has become available since 1.8 was installed at Transpower is also being considered.

"We're looking at NFuse and Citrix Secure Gateway, which are specific to Metaframe XP."

However, some legacy applications will continue to run on 1.8.

"We're still finalizing exactly how we'll do it, but we'll need a separate facility for apps on 1.8."

Web-based delivery is to become more prevalent in the future and an example of a shift to Web-based delivery is the SOE's new PeopleSoft financials package, which was taken off Citrix and on to the Web when it was upgraded from version 7 to 8.

The Citrix upgrade will be carried out by Datacom.
